Over the years, we’ve seen some clients confuse web design and information technology (IT), often thinking that they are one in the same. However, they are actually two completely different professions.

In this article, we will explain the differences between web design and information technology so that you have a better understanding of what skills and training each involve.

What is Web Design and what does a Web Designer Do?

As we have described in an earlier article, web design is simply the process by which a web designer creates a web design layout with an emphasis on appeal and usability.

Web designers can be either UX designers, UI designers, or both.

Some of the Basic Responsibilities of a Web Designer include:

  • Conceptualizing and designing the visual elements of the web design layout based on the requirements of the client.
  • Designing and implementing graphics and other media throughout the design
  • Utilizing design best practices throughout the website creation process
  • Creating and maintaining consistent branding.
  • Working with the web developer(s) to ensure that the coding of the web design, functions and renders as intended, across all browsers.

What is Information Technology?

Information Technology or IT, is the field/profession that involves the installation, repair and maintenance of a computers and computer networks (hardware), and related software, email and security systems.

What Does an IT Specialist or IT Administrator Do?

An IT Specialist is responsible for making sure that employees of the company for which he or she works, are able to rely on their digital technology (computers, software, email an internet) to perform their daily work. This means that an IT Specialist must be able to successfully maintain and upgrade the company’s computer hardware and software, to keep it reliable and secure.

IT Specialist/Administrator Responsibilities usually include:

  • Setting up, configuring and managing new or existing computer networks to facilitate seamless and secure communication among the employees.
  • Troubleshooting, recommending and installing network and computer security software and hardware upgrades.
  • Providing technical support to employees
  • Overseeing all software and hardware purchases.

You should now be able to understand the significant differences between web design and information technology. Therefore, you should never call your IT Specialist/Administrator a web designer, nor should you refer to your web designer as an IT Specialist.

That is not to say that are not some web designers who might know how to set up your emails or some IT professionals who might know a little bit about coding a web design. However, it is very likely that they will be much more proficient at their designated, full-time professions.
