A Top Level Domain (TLD) is simply the letters following the “dot” at the end of each domain name. There are three types of Top Level Domains: Generic Top Level Domains – for a specific class of organizations, such as government, educational, commercial, etc. which are at least three letters in length (.com, .info, etc.). Some can only be used by designated entities, such as .edu for educational institutions, .mil for military and .gov for government. Moreover, these can be further broken down into Sponsored Top Level Domains which are those whose guidelines have been established by an independent agency. Sponsored Top Level Domain Names include: .aero, .coop, .jobs, .mobi, .museum, .pro, .travel, .tel Un-sponsored Top Level Domains are those TLDs not sponsored by agencies. These include: .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, etc.
