As a web designers, it’s important to have the right equipment to do our jobs efficiently and effectively. That said, one of the most important pieces of equipment besides a high performance computer, is the computer monitor.
Computer monitors have come a long way over the past decade and many quality monitors have features that simply can’t be found on budget monitors (those under $200).
So what are the features to consider in a modern, quality monitor for web design?
One or Two Monitors and Monitor Size
It’s not uncommon for web designers to have 2 (or even 3) side-by-side monitors from 21-inch to 24-inch or more. However, having multiple monitors can be distracting to work with. A solution that has been gaining popularity is to use one, much larger monitor. 34-inch monitors have become all the rage these days because they allow us to work seamlessly with multiple windows open simultaneously.
IPS, VA or TN
TN or Twisted Nematic
This is a type of LCD display screen technology offers the shortest response times but results in significant color shifts when viewed at wider angles. As such, this would not be a good choice for web designers. However, they do cost less to make which makes them cheaper for consumers to buy.
IPS or In-Plane Switching
This type of LCD display screen technology results in more consistent and accurate color from wider viewing angles which is what web designers need. It is considered the best of the 3 types of LCD panels and as a result is the most expensive of these technologies.
VA or Vertical Alignment
VA or Vertical Alignment is a less expensive alternative to IPS technology. Although this type of panel technology provides fairly good viewing angles, it does not reproduce color as well as an IPS panel.
A monitor’s resolution is measured in terms of horizontal pixels by vertical pixels (width by height). The higher to resolution, the better. However, some would argue that the newest 4K monitors are simply not worth the extra expense. Be sure that your graphics card supports the higher resolution monitors you intend to purchase.
