Benefits of White Hat SEO

In November of 2023, I wrote an article about black hat SEO. In that article, I did not even mention white hat SEO. However, in subsequent SEO related articles that I have written, I only briefly touched on white hat SEO, never really delving into it with great detail, until now.

So, I finally thought it may be a good time to write an article about white hat SEO in hopes it can help others who may have heard the term, but not really know what it meant.

As some may already know, SEO (Search Engine Optimization), is the implementation of techniques that help search engines, like Google, to more readily understand the content within the pages of a website. When done effectively, it can result in helping a website achieve higher positioning within the organic search engine results pages (SERPs).

That said, there are two different approaches to SEO implementation, one good, called “white hat SEO”, the other, called “black hat SEO”, not so good. You can read more about black hat SEO here. Now, let us get started in explaining white hat SEO.

White Hat SEO Explained

White hat SEO refers to a set of practices that adhere to search engine guidelines. That means it is an “honest” type of SEO work because it does not violate search engine guidelines. Thus, this approach focuses on giving real value to search engine users, as well as the search engines themselves.

What Does White Hat SEO Involve?

White hat SEO is all about doing the right thing, rather than something that violates search engine guidelines. In particular, most of us try to implement SEO that is in line with Google Search Essentials. As I explained in a previous article, Google Search Essentials are the rules, guidelines and best practices that can help website owners create “original”, “reliable” and “helpful” content that is useful to people (Google users), not your website (from a ranking in Google’s SERPs perspective). As such, this describes Google’s approach to content creation as “people-first” rather than “search engine-first”.

Thus, white hat SEO is a strategy that can be effective because search engines such as Google, like website content that is valuable to their human users. What you do not want to do is to make nefarious attempts to manipulate search engines in ways that go against search engine guidelines (black hat SEO).

White Hat SEO Strategies

On-Page Optimization

On-page optimization refers to SEO implementations directly within the pages of your website. This includes writing unique, quality content that search engine users find helpful, as well as image optimization, internal linking, meta tag optimization, etc.

Keyword Research

Finding the most effect keywords that your potential website visitors type into search engines is an important step. This is what we call keyword research. Tools like Google Keyword Planner or SEMrush or MOZ can help you identify popularly searched keywords for your industry.

High-Quality Content Creation

Creating great content is perhaps the most effective white hat SEO strategy. Your content should be helpful, interesting, and answer user questions. When you make valuable content, people want to read and share it.

Optimizing Title Tags and Meta Descriptions

The title tag is what shows up as the clickable headline in Google search results. Your meta description is the short summary below it. Both need to be compelling and include your primary keywords. A well-written meta description should encourage users to click and visit your web page. It should also accurately reflect what that web page is about.

Image Optimization and Alt Text

Although images enhance your website’s visual appeal to its visitors, search engines are unable to “see” them. That is where image alt text comes in. Image alt text is a short description of the image. It helps search engines understand what the image is about. It also helps users with visual impairments, who rely on screen readers.

Off-Page Optimization

Off-page SEO refers to optimizations that are implemented external to a website’s pages. Here are some examples of that.

Link Building

When high authority websites link to yours, it tells Google and other search engines, that your website must be important. The process by which an SEO professional tries to get high authority backlinks for your website is called link building. This can be accomplished by creating valuable content that “earns” inbound links from other websites.

Earning Natural Backlinks

White hat SEO means that backlinks are earned, not bought. Thus, as mentioned earlier, link building can be accomplished simply by creating content that is so good, others want to link to it from their own websites. Another technique is to write guest posts on other authoritative websites.

Avoiding Link Schemes

Some methods of getting links are seen as bad. Buying links or trading links too can really get your website in trouble, particularly with Google. These are considered black hat tactics and should be avoided at all costs. Never, ever pay for inbound links. This is a huge “no-no”.

Local SEO Citations (for relevant businesses)

For local businesses, keeping your name, address, and phone number (NAP) consistent everywhere is vital. Listing your business accurately in online directories helps people find you. This consistency builds trust with both customers and search engines.

Website Speed and Mobile-Friendliness

Nobody likes a slow website. A web page that takes too long to load makes can increase your bounce rate. Google prefers websites that load quickly and are easy to browse on smart phones (mobile friendly).

Website Architecture and Internal Linking

How your website is put together matters a lot. In fact, a clear website structure helps people and search engines find information more efficiently and intuitively. Smart internal linking guides users from one page to another. It can also indicate to search engines which pages are most important.

Schema Markup and Structured Data

Schema markup is a special code you add to your website. It helps search engines better understand your content’s context. For example, it can tell Google if a page is a recipe, a product, or an event. This can lead to rich snippets, which are enhanced search results with extra info.

Benefits of White Hat SEO

Ranking Stability for the Long Haul

Black hat SEO may offer a more immediate boost in Google SERPs, but it is usually just temporary. White hat SEO utilizes methods that create much more sustainable rankings, because you are doing what Google Search Essentials recommends. As such, your website should maintain better visibility in the SERPs for the long-term. This translates into more consistent traffic and customers for your business.

Avoiding Penalties and De-indexing

Using black hat SEO can lead to harsh penalties from search engines such as Google. That means your website could drop in rankings significantly. In extreme cases, your website could be completely removed from the organic search results. White hat SEO safeguards your website from such severe consequences.

Building User Trust and Brand Reputation

When your website focuses on user experience, Google takes notice. This builds a positive brand reputation. Well-regarded brands flourish because they prioritize user experience above all. This not only builds trust, but also translates into loyalty and growth.
