On November 1, 2023, I wrote an article to about black hat SEO, including the techniques involved and what happens if Google determines that a website is using it. What I did not cover in that article, is whether black hat SEO is worth doing, despite the potential risks.
So, if you do not know what black hat SEO is, here is a quick explanation. Black hat SEO is a type of SEO that utilizes techniques which violate a search engine’s guidelines, and in particular, Google. In other words, black hat SEO is cheating, with the goal of getting ahead in the SERPs. To find out more about the different types of black hat techniques, you can read about it here.
While you would think that most reasonable website owners would refrain from using black hat SEO, unfortunately, there are some (perhaps even your competitors) willing to use this nefarious approach, in hopes of improving their organic search rankings.
But, is violating Google’s guidelines in pursuit of better results, really worth it? The short answer, in my opinion, is NO. While some black hat techniques may result in a short-lived potential bump in organic search rankings, white hat SEO professionals believe that the long-term risks far outweigh any such temporary gain.
Why Do People Use Black Hat SEO?
Desperation and The Promise of Quick Results
Who does not want to rank number one overnight in Google or any other search engine? Black hat SEO often promises rapid ranking boosts. Some tactics can, for a very short time, move a website upward in the search results. This arguably more immediate, though temporary, success can be incredibly alluring. Seeing competitors rank quickly can also intensify the desire to step up your SEO game. Thus, if you feel like your website is falling behind, and your phones are not ringing, it can be tempting to find shortcuts. And those shortcuts can end up being very risky black hat tactics.
Misinformation
The internet is full of bad advice and inaccurate information. Some may promote black hat SEO as yet another “secret” to online success. People new to SEO can easily fall for these misleading claims. This misinformation leads many down a dangerous path. Some people also underestimate the severe penalties involved, when caught by search engines such as Google. The perception is usually that search engines will not catch them. This common misconception can lead to disastrous consequences. Ignorance about the consequences is a significant factor when it comes to black hat adoption.
Why Black Hat SEO Is Simply Not Worth It
With the implementation of AI, search algorithms have gotten smarter, learning to better identify websites that utilize manipulative black hat SEO methods. As such, using such risky SEO tactics can not only get your website noticed (in the wrong way), but can also lead to more serious consequences, such as penalties (algorithmic or manual action) from Google.
Google Penalties
When search engines, such as Google, catch identify black hat techniques being used within a website, the consequences can be severe. This might include getting on Google blacklist.
Manual Actions
As mentioned earlier, Google can issue manual actions, meaning a human reviewer spotted a violation. This can lead to your website being completely removed from search results. Obviously, such as penalty would have a devastating impact.
Algorithmic devaluation
Algorithmic devaluations are another type of Google penalty. Google’s Penguin and Panda updates resulted in the automatic identification and penalization of websites using spammy link schemes and/or low-quality content (spamdexing such as keyword stuffing). If this happens to you, your website can experience a significant and almost immediate drop in organic traffic. As such, a website can lose almost all of its organic visibility…ouch!
Long-Term Damage to Reputation and Trust
A website hit by a penalty or linked to spammy, black hat implementations means that users lose trust in your brand. Who wants to buy from a website known for tricking search engines? Such a loss of user trust can be very difficult to recover from.
Money Down the Drain
Think about all of the time and money spent on black hat SEO, after Google penalizes your website and you see your web rankings disappear seemingly overnight. This means wasted resources that could have otherwise been used to invest in legitimate, “white hat” SEO efforts.

Build Authority and Trust Through Quality Content
Arguably one of the best ways to improve your website’s ability to rank is by providing real value. That begins with creating high-quality content that is unique, useful and relevant to your audience and those who use search engines to find their topic of interest. Remember, Google, the world’s most popular search engine, values Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. This means your website content should demonstrate that you know your stuff. Be an expert, be trustworthy and create content that establishes you as an authority. Good content naturally attracts visitors and builds trust. When you create authoritative content that valuable and trustworthy, others will want to link to it.
Improve User Experience (UX)
Elevating the user experience benefits everyone. So, building a super-fast, mobile-friendly website is critical. Why? That is because no one wants to wait around for a web page to load, particularly on a mobile device. And no one wants to browse a website that is difficult to navigate from their mobile devices. Remember, a good user experience keeps people on your website longer and Google should take notice. Moreover, it is best to organize your website logically so that both users and search engines can find relevant content easily. A well-structured site improves crawlability and user satisfaction.
Black hat SEO may be tempting to some website owners, but as outlined in this article, the risks of doing so are simply too significant to ignore.
