Over the years, a number of clients have asked us to explain what an impression is, as it relates to Google Analytics. As a result, I thought it might be a good time to finally write something about it so that anyone else with the same question, could get a simple and straight forward answer.
Impressions Explained
Simply put, impressions represent an important metric in Google Analytics that measures the number of times a link to a website has appeared in the SERPs. Thus, an impression is an important indicator of the visibility and reach of your content and campaigns, which can help you understand the efficacy of your marketing and/or SEO efforts.
How are Impressions Calculated?
Impressions are calculated based on the number of times a specific element is displayed on a webpage (e.g. Google SERPs, or Google Ads partner websites), whether or not it is clicked on or interacted with. For example, an ad impression is counted each time the ad is displayed on a webpage, even if the user scrolls past it without clicking.
Why are Impressions Important?
Impressions are important for a number of reasons. These would include:
Visibility
Impressions indicate the number of people who have been exposed to your content or campaigns. A high number of impressions means that your content is reaching a wider audience.
Reach
Impressions can help you understand the potential reach of your content and campaigns. By comparing the number of impressions to the number of clicks or interactions, you can see how many people are actually engaging with your content.
